Valerie and her wonder dog,
"Cokie Roberts" |
By Valerie Young
In my
last article, "In
the World of Possibilities, New Members Are Always Welcome" I talked
about the difference between the people who live in the so-called Real World
and those of us who dwell in the far more enriching (and frankly more fun)
World of Possibilities. To make my case, I borrowed a
line from actor/director/ hip hop star Will Smith who said, "Being realistic
is the most commonly traveled road to mediocrity."
Okay I need to be fair here.
Even though they may end up living a mediocre life, some Real World-types
are actually quite creative. They are forever thinking up all kinds of ideas
for inventions or articles or businesses. Some even go so far as to jot
down exhaustive notes, outlines, and to-do lists. A few even go so far as to
design prototypes, develop detailed marketing plans, or write entire books.
There is only one
problem. Unless they make the leap to World of Possibilities, no one else
ever sees their handiwork, which leads me to the story of an inspiring dream
grower named Lynn Burkholder from Guelph, Canada. A few weeks ago Lynn sent
out an announcement about her new newsletter, "The Inner Genius." What’s an
"inner genius"? I’ll let Lynn explain:
I believe we are all born with a set of gifts, talents and
preferences that are "hard wired" into our DNA. I don't think it's an
accident or necessarily a result of our environment that we are naturally
drawn to certain tasks and areas of interest. Unfortunately, most of these
gifts are never developed because we are expected to live our lives fitting
into a construct that society has prescribed as the norm.
I also believe that it is never too late to excavate these
gifts and incorporate them into our lives. When I was in Grade One, I used to
write extra stories for my teacher. I even remember the sky blue pencil I
used to write about my sister's wedding. That love for writing has remained
dormant for 30 years. Why? I could give you a long list of reasons but it
all boils down to the fact that I didn't develop the skill because I didn't
believe it was possible. In the society I was shown growing up, people
didn't make money writing. Thankfully, I don't believe that anymore.
What seemingly small, insignificant past-time did you give
up because you were told you couldn't make a living at it? And further, who
lead you to believe that you had to make a living doing just one thing? Why
couldn't there be two or three or ten?
Quite naturally then, Lynn’s new newsletter is aimed at
people who want to pursue their Inner Genius. (Who wouldn’t?) But here’s
where it got interesting. As I continued reading I learned that by signing
up I would not only receive the first issue of Find Your Inner Genius on
July 16th (remember that date) but that it would include a link
to a free Special Report called "12
Ways to Find Out What You Are ‘Supposed’ To Be Doing!"
Commit, Then Do
Why am I telling you
this? Well, Lynn was a member of my 2006 Outside the Job Box Career
Certification program. The formal part of the training program ended in
March. Lynn’s invitation arrived a few months later on July 9th
to be exact (remember this date too). I couldn’t send a congratulatory email
fast enough!
Apparently my words of
encouragement came at the right time because as soon as she’d made this
public commitment, Lynn says she was feeling, "really vulnerable." And why
wouldn’t she? After all, "Now I have to write a newsletter AND a special
report by Monday," adding, half jokingly, "Evidently, I like pressure. Ha
ha."
If I was proud of Lynn
before, I was positively beaming now. She had mastered an incredibly simple
but hugely important lesson about fast tracking any dream – commit, then
do.
The first thing Lynn did
was to put a stake in the ground by setting a deadline. Remember those two
dates – announcing her new newsletter to the world on July 9th
and setting a due date of July 16th? Lynn had given herself
exactly seven days to write a newsletter and a special report.
Now obviously Lynn had
given both the newsletter and the special report a lot of thought. And she
no doubt had parts of both either written or at least sketched out in her
head. Wisely though, she employed THE absolute best technique for making a
more rapid leap from the mediocrity of the Real World to the world where
possibilities become realities… she made herself accountable.
It’s one thing to come up
with one of those made up deadlines that are between "you and you." But to
make sure she stuck to her goal Lynn announced her intention to the world.
There is simply no better way to overcome procrastination than to employ the
Commit, Then Do technique.
If you want to teach a
seminar you haven’t 100 percent designed yet, set a date and start signing
people up for your seminar. If you’ve spent the last year studying how to
import olive oil from Italy, take a small deposit on a few pre-orders. If
you want to write an eBook, promise a bunch of people that you’ll send them a
free copy when it’s done.
Will you make yourself
vulnerable this way? Absolutely! Yet
"Unless you walk out
into the unknown," says Tom Peters, "the odds of making a profound
difference in your life are pretty low."
The person who never
makes him or herself vulnerable will never fall in love, will never visit
long-dreamed-of destinations, will never share their gifts with the world,
and will certainly never live the life they want – and richly deserve. The
way I see it, it is far better to have to reschedule the workshop or return
the deposits or push off the due date to risk being vulnerable than it is to
leading a life of utter mediocrity.
Speaking of mediocrity -
or more precisely the all too common fear that if you do eventually write
your eBook or set up your import business or deliver your seminar that it
will turn out mediocre at best – there is another related concept that any
dreamer needs to master.
Know
When "It’s Good Enough"
In the software
development world, this concept even has a buzzword. It’s called "Good
Enough Quality." In his article "Good
Enough Quality, Beyond the Buzzword," James Bach says, "Microsoft begins
every project with the certain knowledge that they will choose to ship with
known bugs." No big surprise to PC owners and yet, at the same time, rather
startling I’m sure to many.
The big Internet
marketing gurus have another, somewhat more descriptive, name for it. The
phrase they use to urge would-be entrepreneurs to just get your stuff out
there is: "Half a** is better than no a**." (Think Biblical name for donkey
here.)
Before I say another word,
I need to be 100 percent clear here. No one is talking about putting out
sub-par products or services. Bill Gates did not build the dominant software
company in the world with bad products. No one makes it long in the Internet
marketing world, never mind get to be multi-millionaires like the big gurus
have, by putting out schlocky stuff. As Bach is quick to add, "Good enough
has nothing to do with mediocrity."
The point is one of
biggest reasons why most ideas never see the light of day is because people
get so obsessed with making sure that every possible kink is worked out, every
word is perfect, every conceivable base is covered, that they never just get
their stuff out there.
Let’s face it. It’s
always "easier" to do nothing. It’s always easier to endlessly research your
big idea. Never acting on your gifts may be depressing and soul-sucking, yes,
but still it really is easier. So I wish I could tell you there was such a
thing as effortless success. But as Lynn and others know, once you’ve
mastered the concepts of "Commit, Then Do" and the "It’s Good Enough" you
still actually buckle down and DO it.
Do you know why Will
Smith says he never gets tired of pushing? It’s because he says, "There is
no pain worse than not achieving a dream when it is your fault. If God did
not want you to have it, that is one thing. But if you do not get what you
desire because you are lazy, there is no pain worse than that." Amen.
If you’re ready to go
after your dream, Lynn is holding a special "Summer Sale." For a limited time
only, Changing Course subscribers like you can receive a personal 90 -minute
"Outside the Job Box" career consultation for only $50 (normally $150). To
schedule a consultation or to get your free Special Report, go to

newsletter now.

Special
Announcement
Find Your
Calling by Helping Others Realize Theirs
What could be more fun
than sitting at home (or anywhere in the world really) and brainstorming
with people over the telephone about creative ways they could make a living
without a job − and actually getting paid to do it! Or running workshops on
how to turn interests into income? Or making money 24-hours a day by selling
your own eBooks, CDs, or other information products that help people do work
that feeds their soul?
I can't tell you how
gratifying it is to know that the work you do makes some small difference in
other people's lives. Helping someone see possibilities, recognize their
gifts, and connect the dots so they can turn their interests into income, is
something that just comes naturally to me. Maybe it comes naturally to you
too.
If you’re a creative
thinker, are entrepreneurial, love to brainstorm, and want to get paid to do
what comes naturally, then in a few short months, you could be running your
own business as an "Outside the Job Box Career Consultant." I’ll show you
how.
Important Registration Information:
Registration began on Monday at noon Eastern Time, and in less
than two hours, over a third of the very limited number of seats were taken.
On Saturday, August 11th my "company" (that
would be me!) is sending me up to a lake on Saturday to write for a week.
(Sweet!) Since I won’t be around to field questions and I don’t have an
internet connection or cell service at the lake (which is the whole point of
going away to work) I’ve asked Lisa to close down registration for the
program while
I’m gone.
Once I get back I’m going to be really busy getting ready
for the big Work at What
You Love workshop with Barbara Winter happening August 24 and 25. If
there are still seats available after that, I will open the registration
process up again on Monday, August 27th following the workshop.
If you know now that you going to be out of town the week
of August 27th, contact Vision Implementation Manager Lisa
Tarrant at
Lisa@ChangingCourse.com to see if there are still seats available.
To learn more about
whether the Outside the Job Box Certification is right for you I urge you to

How to "Show Up" for
Your Dreams
All this summer I’ve been
featuring the real life stories of people I first met in one of the Changing
Course workshops. People who make the decision to show up at a live event are
people who are ready to "show up" for their dreams. Having met all three of
these inspiring people, I have a feeling these folks would have been successful
no matter what.
To kick things off, here, in
her own words, is Suzanne Willis’s story:
I've been
busy since the workshop! And I'm delighted to report that I have followed my
dreams and I'm teaching etiquette to children and adults. BEFORE the
workshop I’d been the Public Relations Director at luxury resorts for more
than 15 years -- most recently with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company.
AFTER the
workshop I decided that life was too short not to follow my dreams...and I
started planning my future. About a year later, I resigned from my "big
salary" job at The Ritz to pursue my dreams. Before I left The Ritz, I
created an etiquette class for children and named it Mimi's Manners in honor
of my grandmother, Mimi (now I teach it in her memory). I decided that I
wanted to expand the classes and write children's books.
SINCE the
Workshop: I'm now writing a book about manners for children and I continue
to teach etiquette classes at Ritz-Carlton resorts in Florida and at country
clubs, schools, etc. I've expanded the program to include etiquette classes
for teens and adults as well as tea etiquette classes. I'm in the process of
expanding the business (to make a living doing what I love!) and I've even
traveled across the country to teach to business etiquette to Fortune 500
companies.
Your workshop
helped me discover that there are many ways to "make a living without a job"
and I'm enjoying the challenges (but sometimes it's difficult to balance all
the demands)! But I love the freedom -- and I love instilling confidence in
children as they learn (and practice) their manners. My "aha" moment came at
the end when we were all asked to stand up and "declare" what we were going
to do after the workshop. Just saying my dream out loud made it more real
and started to bring it to life. I've realized that it takes "baby steps"
every day. It's scary, exciting, challenging and fun.
Thanks again
to Valerie and Barbara.

p.s. The
attached photo is from (believe it or not) my grandmother's funeral. Her

Next is Jane Kirsch. I first met Jane last summer at the
Northampton seminar and then again when she signed up for the 2006 Outside the
Job Box Career Certification program. Then in July we ran into each other
hundreds of miles from my home when we were both visiting the Chautauqua
Institute at the same time and were approaching the same jeweler at a craft show
– a person we BOTH knew! Talk about your small world!
Jane is a great example of someone who has what Barbara
Winter would call, eclectic income streams. Here is Jane’s story:
Dear Valerie:
This is in response to
Lisa’s query about what has happened to the 2006 participants at the Work At
What You Love workshop. It has been an extraordinary year of
exploration and growth for me and I’d like to share it with all of you.
A little history – I had
been self-employed for much of my adulthood in a variety of endeavors but
about 3 years ago, one of my vendors offered me a position that included an
opportunity to travel, an excellent salary with complete retirement
benefits, and a lot of recognition in the industry. Having just gone
through some real life-changing events, this JOB seemed to be a safety net
that sounded great.
It only took about a year
for me to realize that this was not the ideal career for me by any stretch
of the imagination, and that I was beginning to suffer health problems from
the constant stress.
When I received the
announcement of the workshop in Northampton, I made an instant decision to
attend. I already had a kernel of an idea for a business I wanted to
develop, and I knew that the combined efforts of you and Barbara Winter
would provide the inspiration I needed to launch it.
As fate would have it, I
ended up spending my last day of corporate employment at the workshop that
Friday. What a great place to exit the rat race!
The exercises and group
brainstorming helped me continue the process of defining the design
business. I got a lot of encouragement from my table-mates in
conversations, and was inspired by the speakers and entrepreneurs who shared
their creative and imaginative ideas. The energy is that room was
astounding!
At the same time, some of
that group work helped me realize that the design business was something
that I "just knew how to do" from many years of experience. Being a
true scanner, lots of other ideas popped up that weekend, and I quickly
produced a stack of index cards of different possibilities. But,
since my JOB had ended abruptly, I proceeded to set up my Better Living
Solutions design business in order to keep income flowing.
Then you offered a Creative
Career Consultant Certification program through Changing Course, and I knew
immediately that I wanted to take my years of experience and knowledge to
help others find ways to make their dreams come true. The
training and resources that I received have resulted in a growing private
practice of consultation work that is changing my life.
Now a year later, I am
happily spending my time doing everything I truly enjoy. I design homes
where people can live safely and comfortably despite issues of aging or
physical disability. I consult with creative career clients one-on-one
about their dream endeavors. I do public speaking and conduct
workshops on both subjects, and now, thanks to your encouragement, I am
developing a membership program for single women.
I have been challenged to
learn all about web-sites, blogging and marketing in this internet age and
to improve my writing and communication skills. I have met many
interesting people and the constant exposure to new ideas is thrilling.
Every day is a new adventure.
Besides having time now for my family and
friends, my days are spent working at tasks that excite me and allow me to
truly work at what I love! Thank you
so much for helping me find a wonderful new "retirement" phase of my life.

There are lots of ways to
"show up" for your dream besides attending a workshop. You can find out if there
are any conferences on something you have always dreamed of turning into your
full time job… like say beading. Or you can hop on the Internet and look up how
say to make money from your love of cuddling or canoeing. Or you can start looking into
sources of local funding or free workshops in your area for people who want to
start a small business.
Oh, wait. I already did that
for you! J Scroll down to the Resources for a Change section to see
just how many cool resources and opportunities there are out there for people
who are ready to show up for themselves and their dreams!
We still have about 10 seats
available for the big Work at What You Love workshop. To learn more go

You just never know who you are going to meet in Paris!
While reviewing the
Ultimate Travel Photographer course held in Paris in May, I
not only learned a ton about all the different ways to turn your
photos in cash, but I also met some of the most fascinating
people.
I could go on about the couple who reside half the year in
Santa Cruz, California and the other half living on a barge on a
river in the south of France… or the woman who at 55 decided it
was now or never so packed up her bags and moved to Venice for a
year on her own… or dozens of other adventuresome travel lovers
that I met from 16 countries.
But the one that really captured this entrepreneur’s
imagination was
Master Dog Chef Micki Voisard of
Dog Chefs of America. In
addition to an interest in photography, Micki runs her
fascinating business in the Arizona desert in a totally unique
'50s diner-style working kitchen that doubles as a classroom.
This whimsical environment doubles as a TV set backdrop as well
as a location for film and educational CD/DVD production.
Micki is quick to point out that, "This is not a "cutesy"
doggie bakery!" Instead she creates daily prepared meals of real
food for dogs, and teaches future dog chefs how they can improve
their dog's health through implementation of a real food diet.
When she’s not teaching cooking classes on site, Micki’s public
speaking schedule allows her to do her other favorite activity –
travel! If all that weren’t enough, Micki is currently producing
her first television program. Talk about going after a dream!
What impressed me even more though is that on top of
everything else she’s doing, Micki still finds time to make a
difference. When hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Micki, her
husband David and a small band of friends sprang into action to
help a struggling dog shelter in New Orleans.
follow the monthly chronicle of how she is living her grand
vision of encouraging others to just "jump in and get it done!"
Listen in as I interview Micki about what it takes to succeed in this
fascinating business and hear her advice to others who have a
big dream. If you love dogs or cooking or giving back, or all of
the above, you won’t want to miss this informative and inspiring

Learn How to Build or Restore
Canoes Fine craftsmanship and restoration of all things vintage is
very big right now. If you are the handy type, and like the idea of building or
restoring canoes, one place to start is with a 7-12 day class at Salmon Falls
Canoe here in beautiful Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. Even if wood working is
not for you I think you’ll be inspired by the beauty of the handiwork featured
in Restoration Gallery. (Wood-Canoe.com)
Get Paid to Cuddle
Okay, it’s not what it sounds like. According to Cuddle Party web site a "Cuddle
Party" is a playful social event designed for adults to explore communication,
boundaries and affection. It is the brainchild of two relationship coaches, Reid
Mihalko and Marcia Baczynski. Since 1994, its founders say they "have sought to
bring clean, safe, welcomed affection to the world through these events." Today
they travel the U.S. facilitating Cuddle Parties workshops and conducting leader
certification programs. The founders have gotten a ton of media coverage all of
which serves as an inspiring reminder that you really can take anything you love
to do, become and expert at it, and turn it into a business! Attending a
workshop in your pajamas may or may not be for you, but you have to admit, it’s
a fascinating way to make a living! (CuddleParty.com)
Free Assistance for Low-Income Women
The Women’s Initiative for Self-Employment provides
a one-stop shop where high-potential, lower-income women in the San Francisco
Bay area receive training to start and grow their business. They offer business
management training, technical assistance, and financing services in English and
Spanish. I heard about this worthwhile organization from Claudia Caruso, a
participant in the Making Dreams Happen workshop. Claudia volunteers as a mentor
in this organization’s "speed mentoring program." To learn how you can access
services or, like Claudia, contribute, go to

International Bead and Beadwork Conference This amazing event will feature
25 speakers from all over the world with the entire first day about Middle
Eastern beadwork. Even if you can’t make it to Istanbul this November do
yourself a favor and check out the bios of the workshop leaders. All of you who
love making beaded jewelry but never thought you could turn it into a serious
profession are in for a treat. If you can’t make the conference, invest in your
dream with a subscription to Beadwork magazine. (Interweave.com)
